Bradley Trainer

Atari · 1980

by Daniel Ferrer

The Army's gunnery trainer on Battlezone's hardware, at the arcade's own 40 Hz with its sound through the jack. You are the gunner: the stick turns and raises the turret, and the buttons pick the weapon, the rate, the zoom and the range.

Controls
The stick aims the turret: left and right turn it, up and down raise and lower the gun, and it stays where it is left. Button 1 fires. Button 2 steps the weapon (25 mm AP, 25 mm HE, TOW missiles, 7.62 mm machine gun), button 3 the 25 mm's rate (single shot, low, high). Button 4 tapped switches the magnification between 3 and 12; held, the stick up and down sets the range. Buttons 1 and 2 together insert a coin and start. The vehicle does not move: the cabinet has no controls for it. On the web: Z, X, C, V and the arrow keys.

Changelog

  1. v1.12026-11-08
    • The romset can live in any folder of the card. The game looks in .roms/, then roms/, then searches the whole card, and remembers where it found it (.conf/<romset>.loc), so the next start goes straight there; if it is moved, it is searched for again.
    • Settings go in .conf/ and romsets in .roms/: the UVMC2's menu hides folders whose name starts with a dot, so the card shows only the games. A card set up before keeps everything: the old config/ and roms/ are still read, and nothing is written to them any more.
    • Without the romset on the card the screen says ROM FILE NOT FOUND and the name of the zip it wants.
  2. v1.02026-11-04
    • First release.
    • Its controls respond: the game was given Battlezone's memory map instead of its own, so of the trigger, the weapon buttons and the turret only START was read; and the turret's and the range's knobs were never read at all.
    • The cabinet's controls on the pad: the yoke on the stick, the trigger, the weapon and rate selectors stepped by two buttons, the magnification switch and the range knob on the fourth.
    • Sound through the jack: the cabinet has Battlezone's sound board, so the same circuits recorded from MAME, and the POKEY emulated.
    • The landscape is cut to the window the game sets on the vector generator, as on the cabinet: it was drawn out to the screen's edges.
    • The cabinet's switches as it ships (three lives, bonus at 15000 and 100000), with one coin a credit.
    • The picture keeps the cabinet's 4:3 shape and fills the screen, upright and with the console on its side.
    • Runs at the arcade's own 40 Hz.
    • An options screen at start, after the Vectrex Studio intro: screen vertical or horizontal, refresh, brightness, controls (the buttons can be remapped, and the choice is saved) and calibration.
